Juventus: From 1912 to today, we retrace the club's history of scams and misdeeds.
rubosport Written on March 3, 2023
It's said that Juventus has always stolen. But exactly: what and when?
Since many of you are wondering, Big Luciano presents the "story of a great love."
It all started way back
in 1912/13. The championship was divided into regional groups. Juventus finished last and were relegated. Alessandria was supposed to take their place. To get them back, a crazy formula was invented: Brescia in the Veneto group, Juventus in the Milan group.

In 1947 Gianni became president and started the circus.

In 1955, Gianni handed over the presidency to Umberto.
Four years later, Umberto ascended to the most important position of power in Italian football: he became, at the age of 25, president of the FIGC . He took on that role precisely in the season in which Juventus lost a match by default, and not by chance...
1960/61 : On April 16, Juventus and Inter faced each other: the municipal stadium was packed, with fans crowding around the pitch. Inter played the better team, but in the 31st minute the crowd entered the pitch and the referee called a time-out. The League awarded a 0-2 defeat to Inter. Juventus appealed...
And who did they appeal to? The FIGC ! And its president (Umberto), completely impartial, ordered the match to be replayed, ignoring Inter's schedule. Inter, in protest, sent out their young players.

1966/67 : On the final day, Inter, first in the league, travels to Mantua.
Juventus (one point behind, in Rome against Lazio), in a sporting spirit, promises a match bonus.
As if that weren't enough, referee Francescon tells the Inter fans: "Know that I won't award penalties; I don't want to decide the championship." No sooner said than done.

He won't call two glaring fouls, one on Mazzola and one on Suarez. But Mantua still doesn't score. Then a harmless cross crosses the penalty area. Sarti , the former Inter goalkeeper, deflects it into his own net. And where does Sarti end up, ending his career the following year?

1971/72 : Juventus are champions, one point ahead of Milan and Turin. The incidents in Cagliari are sensational, while Milan are making a comeback. Rivera blurts out: "It's written somewhere that we absolutely can't catch Juventus." He's suspended for 3.5 months, essentially the entire return leg.

Sensational incidents penalize all the chasing teams. Torino is complaining about Agroppi's missed goal against Sampdoria (Lippi blocked it over the line), and two referees from the Cormons section were involved in the Milan match. Look at the coincidence. They wrote a book about it.

1972/73 : Penultimate matchday. In the 45th minute, Roma is 1-0 up against Juventus: it's a play-off against Lazio. Anzalone, Roma president, goes to the locker room and makes it clear that the friendship with Juventus is important. Juventus draws (it would have been a play-off against Milan), with the winning goal in the 87th minute.

But the best is yet to come in the Champions Cup.
Juventus-Derby County 3-1. Haller (Juventus) speaks to the referee during the match. Taylor of Derby County asks to watch: Haller punches him and calls security. Clough at the end of the match: “No cheating bastards will I talk to. I will not talk to any cheating bastards!” Good.

The 1976/77 season is among the top five for thefts .
Roma-Toro 1-0: a giant penalty denied marks the only defeat for the Granata.
Catanzaro-Juve 0-1: Gentile scores from offside.
Sampdoria-Juve: at 0-1, Sampdoria charges forward, receiving a second red card in the 84th minute, finishing 0-2.
Juve 51, Toro 50.
1979/80 : The Totonero. Juventus was the only team acquitted despite the controversial Bologna-Juventus 1-1 draw, which included a goalkeeper blunder and an own goal . According to Petrini, the teams were acquitted because Boniperti persuaded Cruciani not to appear in court after receiving a significant " incentive ."

1980/81 : May 10, 1981, Juventus-Roma, referee Bergamo . Turone scores, the referee allows the goal, then sees the linesman with his flag raised. The goal is disallowed, the match ends 0-0. Juventus wins by 2 points over Roma. And yes, the referee is none other than "that Bergamo over there." Coincidence or gratitude?

1981/82 : Final matchday.
Cagliari-Fiorentina: Graziani scores, but referee Mattei calls a non-existent foul on the goalkeeper (0-0).
Catanzaro-Juve : Brady's penalty is awarded, but the referee ignores Gentile's penalty on Borghi (0-1). Juve wins by one point.
1984 Super Cup. A two-legged final, Juventus first opted out. Then, no, they didn't opt out if Liverpool agreed to play it as a one-off final in Turin. Platini called Briaschi offside, Boniek's goal scored Juve's 1-0.
Four months later, the Champions Cup final was played. It was the Heysel Stadium .
Juventus won, as shown in the photo below. They celebrated with 39 souls under their studs.
"We kept the cup, the blood was ours" (Boniperti quote).
1985/86 : European Cup quarterfinals. The first leg drew 0-0 in Verona. In Turin, Briegel's hands were nonexistent, Juventus awarded a penalty, 1-0. Serena punched Di Gennaro, but the penalty was not awarded. Rumor has it the referee had dinner with Platini . Bagnoli told the police: " If you're looking for the thieves, they're in the other locker room ."
1985/86 : Juventus-Roma 3-1, Viola gets beaten in the stands. 0-2, no forfeit.
Roma and Juventus tied on points.
Penultimate matchday: Roma-Lecce 2-3, with relegated Lecce playing to the death.
Last matchday: Lecce-Juventus 2-3, with Lecce in their slippers. It must have been a coincidence.
1989/90 : UEFA Cup, two-legged final against Fiorentina. First leg: 3-1 with a foul by Casiraghi on the second goal. Baggio is sold to Juventus between the first and second legs. Artemio Franchi is suspended for the second leg, the match being played in Avellino. In short, everything was in order!
1994/95 and 1995/96 : Juventus is overwhelming on the pitch. First, the Scudetto and the Coppa Italia, then the Champions League. Very few strange incidents. True, the players are muscular, but "that's only because they work their asses off in the gym." Not really...
1994 : At Juventus, president Boniperti is at the end of his tether. Umberto Agnelli appoints Giraudo as the new CEO , and Bettega as vice-president. A sports director is missing. Gianni wants a corporate overhaul. "The king's stableman must know all the horse thieves," he declares, with barely concealed monarchical modesty.
He chooses MOGGI , fresh from dinners with referees in Rome , from Maradona's cocaine in Naples, from the interpreters who knew their way with the language in Turin. He won't disappoint him.
He starts by hiring Agricola , a specialist in equestrian... er, sports medicine
. A perfect choice.
1994/95 : At first, things were normal. From December on, the team ran fast, running hard.
Juve reached the final stages of every competition, and by May they had played more games than anyone else.
But they still physically outclassed all their opponents.
1995/96 : With the athleticism of the previous year, and a couple of glaring defeats against Nantes in the semifinals, Juventus won the Champions League. But abroad, their breathless runs and exploding muscles didn't go unnoticed. Our opponents still remember it today:
in the quarterfinals, Nantes faced Spartak Moscow. A tough nut to crack, they had won every match in the group, but the French side beat them 2-0 in the first leg and contained them in the return (2-2 after a comeback). In short, the Canaries were starting to believe.
Too bad they faced a Juventus with Agricola at their best in the semifinals. Muscular and physically strong players like Makelele and Capron were surprised by Conte's outpacing them and constantly outpaced by Torricelli, who were no Hulk Hogan or Usain Bolt. As if
that weren't enough, the referee intervened. In the first leg, they denied a clear penalty on Ouédec in the first half and didn't send off Vialli (he broke Decroix's nose). The match ended 2-0.
In the second leg, Nantes tried, winning 3-2, but their dream ended, in the most unfair way, against the horses of the Turin racecourse.
Juve reached the final. And faced Ajax. And beat them, with Finidi George watching in disbelief as Di Livio raced. Ajax also remembered that Champions League. Indeed, everyone in Europe remembers it.
1996/97 : Agricola is responsible for getting them to 1000 , while Moggi is responsible for helping them on the pitch . For the Scudetto, which requires a lot of help. Plus a big, sensational help in the direct clash.
1997/98 : The year of shame.
To beat Ronaldo, "something has to happen that's never happened before."
Well, it happens. Goals missed, targeted bookings, impunity on and off the pitch.
According to U. Agnelli, "2/3 oversights."
Elio turns it into a 6-minute song.
Inter holds firm and the match heads to the line. The final blow is needed. Ceccarini
delivers it in Turin. And it's not the penalty, but the dozens of fouls not awarded and yellow cards reversed since kickoff. Pressing's replay by @pisto_gol lasts 9 minutes.
1998/99 : Zeman expresses his astonishment at the "muscular explosions" of Vialli and Del Piero. The lengthy doping trial begins.
As if by magic, Juventus' performances plummet: 98/99, 99/00, and 00/01: zero titles and European embarrassment.
2001/02 : Bergamo and Pairetto are the referees. Inter are ahead, no head-to-head matches are over. In Venice, after his dive, Maniero himself is surprised by the penalty. In Chievo, De Santis is too close to the action. And much more. On May 5th, Inter commit suicide, but Moggi loaded their pistol.
2002/03 : Another Scudetto snatched from Inter! Head-to-head, '89: a good penalty for Juve. Juve-Parma: at 0-2, Lamouchi gets a red card, not Tacchinardi, then Del Piero controls the ball with both hands to equalize. And much more. All good!
2004/05 : AC Milan were robbed of the Scudetto, which was later revoked, combining injustices against the Rossoneri with favors for the Bianconeri. Among the former, a sensational Livorno-Milan match. At the other end, emblematic encounters between Bologna and Brescia. It's impossible to list all the episodes.
2005/06 : Juventus plays poorly, but the referees are pitiful, and Inter, I quote, " doesn't have the same consistent refereeing support ." But from March 2006 onwards, football will lose importance.

In March 2006 , Juventus celebrated the Supreme Court's ruling on the doping trial. The offense was proven and the guilt of the club and doctor was confirmed , but the statute of limitations kicked in . For the defense lawyers, "It was a great success." Hurray, hurray!

It ends with Juventus 1st and Milan 2nd, but at the ceremony I said " I no longer have a soul, they killed it ." Calciopoli broke out .
Moggi immediately resigned (read "I, Agnelli man, am kicked out by the Elkanns") along with the entire Triad.
The sanctions are severe. Moggi is banned for life (but not forever). Juventus risks relegation to Serie C , then is relegated to Serie B. They lose two Scudetti, one of which is awarded to Inter. Fortunately, the statute of limitations applies for crimes prior to 2004/05 . An international disgrace.
The subsequent trials confirmed the suspicions. Moggi controlled everything . The FIGC, with Mazzini. The AIA, with Bergamo and Pairetto. The transfer market and the agents of countless players. The list of Moggi's "friends" in the newspapers and on TV was endless. Nothing happened that Moggi didn't want.

2006/07 : Juventus takes the ruling as a blessing. They restart after a year of purgatory.
The Agnellis and Elkanns take four years to settle family accounts and find a new corporate structure. To be honest, I don't think the choice of new managers was a wise one...
Andrea was raised by Moggi and Giraudo. And in fact, things aren't exactly changing for the better. The rest is recent history, almost as entertaining as our era.

2009/10 : Agnelli takes office on May 19, declaring “we will build a winning Juventus”.
2010/11 : Agnelli inaugurates a stadium that someone else designed, financed, and built.
He slaps on it a haphazard number of league titles.
The Continassa land was paid €0.58 per square meter to the Turin municipality, a scandal.

2011/12 : Agnelli sensationally snatches his first Scudetto.

2012/13 : Another Scudetto stolen . Less than the first, but it still took some effort. In the Champions League, Bayern knocked them out in the quarterfinals.
2015/16 : Stolen everything in Italy. Kicked out of the Champions League by Bayern with a goal from Coman, who were all happy to have sold him and even thought they'd paid dearly for him.

2016/17 : On the pitch, they rather spectacularly snatched the Scudetto from Roma.
They tried again for the treble, arriving at the Cardiff final as favorites.
They were beaten four times. And nothing, " we'll try again next year ."

In April , the "first" scandal erupted, revealing connections between the fans, Juventus management, and the 'Ndrangheta . Meanwhile, Agnelli ignored it and got himself elected president of the ECA.
2017/18 : A sensational year. The Scudetto was epically stolen from Napoli: Orsato took care of it on the pitch and someone else made the VAR audio disappear.
In the Champions League , a garbage can : while they were anticipating the comeback against Real, Benatia committed a stupid foul: Buffon and Chiellini became legends.
2018/19: Since they can't get past CR7, they buy him for just €100 million + €30 million per year + some black money. Marotta calculates the costs of the transfer fee and salary and leaves in October.
2019/20 : Paratici buys De Ligt. He steals the Scudetto from Inter thanks to numerous gifts. To avoid playing Juve-Inter behind closed doors due to Covid, they postpone the match until whatever the hell they want. They try again in the Champions League, but in the round of 16 they face the unbeatable Lyon, and Depay knocks them out.

2020/21 : Capital gains wizard Paratici tries to sign Suarez for free. But Agnelli isn't satisfied; he wants him on the EU market. "A kid likes cucumella." The Perugia farce is uncovered during another investigation . Obviously, they don't give him a damn, not even a fine.

Here's the big deal: Agnelli, Barca, and Real Madrid launch the Super League! Nine more clubs join.
Cerefin and UEFA get a little pissed off, and everyone drops out within hours. Meanwhile, there's a bad atmosphere surrounding capital gains : I'm sacking Paratici.
2020/21 : On the sporting front, the Champions League Round of 16 featured the unstoppable Porto, and no way, they were unstoppable. In the league, thanks to Calvarese, they qualified for the Champions League, snatching qualification and tens of millions from Napoli.

2021/22 : Ronaldo can't take it anymore and runs away in hysterics. De Ligt goes to Bayern and has something for everyone. Paratici buys their flops at Tottenham. Villarreal slaps him three times at home in the Champions League round of 16.
And here we are in 2022/23. Agnelli has his cousins against him, the fans against him, and the team isn't performing.
The rest is history...
